BIRTH RATES SHOW INTERESTING TRENDS: When the pandemic hit, the birth rate in North Carolina – and nationally – started to trend down.

In fact, an analysis by Carolina Demography at UNC-Chapel Hill shows the state had 9.2 percent fewer births in January 2021 than January 2019.

But the birth rate appears to be coming back, with more recent data showing birth rates that are closer to prior years. Still, the drop was interesting – and dramatic in some counties.

From 2019 to 2020, Orange County births dropped 5.1 percent, Durham County 3.5 percent, Wake County 1.1 percent and Johnston County 1.4 percent.

DOWNTOWN CVS CLOSING: A CVS (NYSE: CVS) store that has been in downtown Raleigh for years is closing.

The store has a “we’re closing” sign on the door and a member of the pharmacy team said the store will close for good on March 29.

The pharmacy is located in the ground floor of the 11-story Raleigh Building, which Empire Properties bought for $12.37 million in November.
