Strangely, Nunes failed to mention that in 2019, he sued Twitter, seeking a quarter of a billion dollars in damages, over a “free flow of ideas” that included a parody account known as “Devin Nunes’ Cow,” which the representative claimed defamed him. The lawsuit was thrown out in 2020, with a Virginia judge ruling that Twitter was protected by Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which Trump and Co., who talk a big game about First Amendment rights until someone says something they don’t like, have tried to get repealed.
In a statement, California Republican Party Chair Jessica Millan Patterson praised Nunes’s work, saying he “fought tirelessly for his constituents in the valley and for our state in the House of Representatives.” The California Democratic Party was slightly less effusive, writing in a tweet, “Devin Nunes has long been an embarrassment to California. It’s only fitting that he now leaves Congress to debase himself even further to Donald Trump.”
