During the pandemic, organisations such as UK Finance have reported an exponential rise in online scams as the general public moves to operating almost entirely on the web in both a professional and personal capacity. While many know these scams can appear as texts or emails, there are other ways fraudsters are targeting innocent people to take their cash. Gaming has become a Covid-era pastime thanks to the series with Ofcom estimating that 62 percent of Britons played a video game during the pandemic.

Role playing games, such as World of Warcraft, have become particularly popular due to people looking for ways to many people looking for ways to live a life outside the confines of their quarantined home.

However, scammers have seen this as an opportunity to fraud people out of their money and identity.

George, 31, is one of the many gamers who has been a victim to this developing method of committing fraud.

While playing one of his favourite role playing games, the Londoner was targeted by a fraudster, or a bot created to carry out the scam, which offered him an opportunity to acquire in-game currency easily.

Yet, after accepting the bot’s offer, the gamer found himself locked out of his account as scammers managed to get access to it in an attempt to acquire his private information.
