A Santa Clarita UberEats driver is warning others in her industry about a recent scam targeting delivery app employees.
Domenica Spargifiore, a medical student who is working for UberEats to help pay for her schooling, was recently scammed out of over $400 after someone posing as an Uber employee called her and used inside information to convince her of the legitimacy of the call.
On Sunday evening, Spargifiore had multiple orders cancelled on her back-to-back, with two different individuals claiming to be from Uber calling within minutes to tell her how to resolve the issue.
After Spargifiore was told to cancel the first order due to it being purchased with a stolen credit card, an alleged Uber employee contacted her through the app to provide her with the next steps in the scam.
“They kept telling me I needed to verify codes and they even sent me an email from Uber with yet another code I had to give her,” Spargifiore told KHTS. “She had me go to my wallet and put in this huge code. She told me I was going to be paid for at least going to pick up the orders, and the next thing I knew my money was gone and my wallet showed me at a negative amount.”
After noticing she had lost all her money, Spargifiore continued to work and soon received an order from the same person who placed the first order at a different restaurant, according to Spargifiore.
