
An Irish businesswoman and former sports star has allegedly netted half a million euro in a scam that preys upon people whose homes were about to be repossessed.
Catriona Carey is said to run a scheme that exploited families who were already under extreme financial pressure.
Ms Carey played hockey for Ireland and camogie for Kilkenny and is a sister of former Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey.
Gardaí are investigating complaints made by at least 15 people against her and her company.
In RTÉ Investigates – The Accountant, The Con, The Lies, broadcast on Monday night, her alleged victims spoke out about their experiences, with one describing it as ‘a dirty rotten thing for any human to do to another’.
Catriona Carey trained as an accountant, and is also the director and owner of an English-registered company called Careysfort Asset Estates Ltd.

According to RTÉ, her ‘scam’ was based on how banks sell distressed mortgages to other banks and vulture funds at big discounts, to get them off their books.
