The RCMP-RNC Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Teams are warning about a sextortion scam targeting young males which is making the rounds.

Police recently learned of a young man in this province who accepted a social media friend request from an unknown person who presented themselves as a female. The scammer then offered to trade nude images with the young man. Once the images were sent, the scammer threatened to share the images with his friend list if he did not send money.

Cybertip.ca reported in September that there has been a 62 per cent increase in the sextortion of youths, with young males aged 15 to 17 being the largest group of victims.

Police are advising people not to accept friend requests from people they don’t know, don’t share “nudes” and do not respond to requests for money.

If you have been the target of a sextortion scam, stop communicating with the scammer immediately, do not send any money and contact local police.
