PETALING JAYA: Police have warned the public against responding to an online scam that is offering driving licences for different classes of vehicles without having to undergo any form of test.
Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Kamarudin Md Din said a syndicate is believed to be behind the driving licence advertisement that was being shared on social media.
“All the victims have to do is provide their personal details and make a payment of about RM580 to RM5,000 to get a driver’s licence,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook today.
He also said police had received nine reports about the syndicate, seven from Penang and two from Kelantan, involving RM17,080 in losses.
“The cases are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code,” he added.
Police also advised the public to be vigilant especially when conducting bank transfers via the internet or social media.
“Check the account number and telephone number via the Semak Mule portal before transferring money,” Kamarudin said.
Reports about illegal driving licences or “lesen terbang” first came to light on Dec 4 last year.
