BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The American Gaming Association reports more than 31 million Americans will likely place a bet on Super Bowl Sunday.

Just a few weeks ago, Louisiana was given the green light for online sports betting.

“We have to worry about scammers out there who are going to try to take advantage of consumers who are going to do their first betting online through these certain apps,” said Carmen Million, president of Better Business Bureau of South-Central Louisiana.

Million said this weekend is the perfect opportunity for scammers.

The BBB provides the following tips:

  • Always make sure you investigate the website to make sure it’s legitimate before you place a bet.
  • Never respond to pop up requests.
  • Never provide financial or personal identifiable information over social media.
  • If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Accounts promising immediate or guaranteed returns are a red flag, particularly when it comes to something like sports betting, where there is no guaranteed outcome.

Attorney General Jeff Landry said the risk of fraud has increased by 114 percent within the last year. With that in mind, Million said you should take precautions now before your fun is ruined.
