The difference is the goals and scale of operation. Where the average online scammer is just trying to steal money, Russian attacks would be trying to utilize the information as a backdoor into larger system.
Daniel Fleming teaches the cybersecurity courses at the University of Dubuque. He says while people need to be mindful not everyone needs to worry.
“What’s your job? The more your job is in government the more you may be a target as like a gateway into a government system,” Fleming said. “But for those of us who work in the private sector, you should be alert but not worried or panicked.”
However Fleming says vigilance is key to protecting from cyber attacks is vigilance. He warns while most attacks won’t be aimed at private citizens, they may diversify targets.
“I run my mom and pop flower shop here in Dubuque, which is really cool. Why would they ever come after me,” Fleming said. “Well maybe they’ll use you as a way into the banking system. Or they’ll just use you to cause chaos.”
