An identity thief ran up a $1,198 Xfinity bill and charged a $263 Old Navy purchase to his victim’s Visa account, a 51-year-old Dearborn Heights man reported Dec. 24 to police officers.
The victim said he received a letter in mid-December from a collection agency claiming he owed Xfinity money, which he thought was a scam. However, when he learned that his Visa card had been used at an Arkansas Old Navy store, he reported the breach to his financial institution and closed the account.
The man said he only used the Visa card for online purchases and a local gym membership. He said his personal information may have been stolen a year ago, when his Equifax credit reporting account was hacked.
