Exactly what happened to Melissa Caddick and the millions of dollars she stole has been one of those enthralling tales where every twist and turn has kept us on the edge of our seats.
Almost 18 months since her disappearance and people are still keen to share their suspicions and doubts about what happened to the wealthy 49-year-old woman from one of Sydney’s most affluent suburbs who vanished without a trace on November 11, 2020.
People would stop me in the street, at the dog park, in cafes and at work. Everyone wanted me to dissect their theories and ask if I had inside knowledge about who kidnapped her, where she was hiding or who might have murdered her.
Every time I wrote a story, the interest was enormous – as was the amount of feedback, with fresh tips, possible sightings and harrowing tales from victims.
I thought the story was over the day police confirmed her partial remains, a foot, had been found in a sneaker that had washed up on a remote beach hundreds of kilometres from her eastern suburbs mansion.
How wrong I was.
The Melissa Caddick case continues to be a macabre thriller where the facts are stranger than fiction. And it was such a good story to talk about with people. So the idea to make a podcast was born.
