GEORGETOWN — Chairman Jim Dumm has resigned suddenly Jan. 3 from the Georgetown County School Board after 27 years.

Dumm cited personal and family health considerations for his departure that comes several months after he was accused of embezzlement at a boy’s home he ran for 50 years. Dumm has not been charged.

Reached by phone Jan. 3, Dumm said he was tied up and then hung up.

Alan Walters, executive director of safety and risk management for the Georgetown County School District, said the health of Dumm’s wife has been a recent concern.

“This was going to be the last year of his term anyhow,” Walters said.

A special election will be held to finish the final months of Dumm’s current term that ends in November. Board Vice Chair Arthur Lance will serve as chairman. 

In a statement, the Georgetown County School District said it was “grateful to Mr. Dumm for his outstanding record of service and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.”
