FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about construction scammers in the area.

According to the sheriff’s office, the scammer — along with some “helpers” — agrees to do a small construction job for a resident; charges the resident a very high amount for the job; and then completes a very cheap, low-quality job for the resident.

Deputies say they have received information that shows the vehicle used by the scammer is a black pick-up truck with South Carolina tags.

The sheriff’s office offers the following tips to avoid being scammed:

  • Ask for a business license
  • Don’t pay for a job in advance
  • Ask for references
  • If you have a doubt about the business, ask them to leave
  • Write down the vehicle information

If you have any information about this scammer, you are asked to contact the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at (540) 483-3000 and ask for Investigator Steve McFarling.
