A community activist has exposed how thieves are affixing metal plates to cash machines to stop customers from receiving their money.

Naveed Sadiq inserted his card into two ATMs along Alum Rock Road which then did not issue money.

Using a screwdriver, he was easily able to lift a suspicious metal plate – which was preventing the cash from being dispensed.

Mr Sadiq said he went to investigate after receiving a message from a man who had not received his money at the Alum Rock Road ATM.

The 46-year-old community activist, who works with a group called Bearded Beys, said: “An individual got in touch with me via Facebook.

“He said he went to take money out from the post office cashpoint on the Pelham side and money was struggling to come out. He realised something was wrong.

“Then, when he walked away form the machine, he saw some guys go up to the cash machine and take money.”

Mr Sadiq added: “He called me and said it had happened again. I went with a screwdriver and looked at the cash machine and could clearly see that the piece added wasn’t part of the cash machine.

“I quickly prized it off and took the money. I went to the another cash machine along the Alum Rock Road towards Saltley gate and the same thing…
