LAREDO, TX (KGNS) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection is trying to protect Americans from a surge in scam calls that are hitting our area.

According to CBP, residents are receiving calls with a pre-recorded message stating that a box of drugs and money have been shipped in their name on it and it has been intercepted.

Others say they are getting calls from people claiming to be CBP employees and saying that there is a warrant out for their arrest

The caller then attempts to collect the victim’s banking information, social security or credit card number.

The agency says they will not call to collect money over the phone nor does it use bitcoin or other digital currency.

If you suspect that you are being scammed, hang up and call police or you can contact CBP directly at (956)-726-3120.
