During tax filing season, digital criminals increase their phishing scam activity.
Our university’s email security gateway intercepts a number of phishing emails, but
some suspicious messages may get through the filters.
 
Tax phishing scams commonly target emails that end in “.edu”. The scam emails impersonate
the IRS using IRS logos. Common tax phishing subject lines include:
 
“Don’t Forget to Pay the Tax Within 2 Days”
“Recalculation of Your Tax Refund Payment”
 
These emails typically ask the recipient to select a link to make a payment or claim
a refund. They may also request personal information including your Social Security
number, banking, or credit card information.
 
The IRS will never ask for personal information via email.
 
If you receive an email claiming to be from the IRS that contains a request for personal
information:

  • Don’t reply.
  • Don’t open any attachments or select any links.
  • Forward the email as-is to
