 BBB January 2022 Hot Topics.

 

  1.  As tax season approaches, BBB warns of IRS copycat websites. One local consumer has already encountered one and reported it to BBB. Copycat websites often charge you for a service that is typically free, and they often “phish” for your personal and financial information. Visit the IRS’s actual website (IRS.gov) for all tax-related forms, questions, etc.
  2. A local consumer reported to BBB that her son and daughter had fallen victim to an Instagram “brand ambassador” scam. They were offered discount codes on products; however, the items were never received. Be wary of anyone who comments on your Instagram posts with “DM to collab” (or similar messaging), offers you an ambassadorship role right away, and/or asks you to buy a product. These are red flags for scams! 
  3. A local consumer reported to BBB that he was the victim of an online romance scam, and the scammers were threatening to release compromising images to his family and friends. BBB warns against sending any intimate photos or videos to potential romantic partners you’ve just met. You could become the victim of attempted blackmail.  
  4. BBB continues to receive reports of reshipping scams involving Gentleman’s Courier Service. It has been reported to BBB by the former owner of Gentleman’s Courier Service that someone is using the now-closed company’s name and likeness to pose as a legitimate business. BBB reminds…
