SIBU: An accountant lost RM48,445 after she was cheated by her friend through an online app.
Acting Sibu OCPD Supt Dr Collin Babat said the 30-year old victim had met a friend on Thursday (Feb 24) at Jalan Merdeka.
Her friend told her that she was interested in buying furniture from a shop that had advertised on Facebook.
“The suspect asked the victim to help her pay for the furniture first. She was told to download the shop’s Android application on her handphone,” he said.
After the app had been downloaded, she paid the registration fee of RM10.
“Following that she had to fill in her banking details. She filled in the particulars of her savings and credit cards of three different banks,” he said.
However at 6.15pm on the same day, the victim received SMSs from the three banks saying that money totalling RM48,445 had been transferred out to different accounts.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
