
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – In 2020 over 900 Wyoming citizens reported that they had been cheated by scam callers. This led to over $5,000,000 worth of stolen money in the state. The Evansville Police Department recently highlighted a phone scam that was first reported in 2016 to be making a comeback this year.
These scammers usually have more information than might think possible. Often times they can have your full name and sometimes even your address. They will also usually already have access to your credit card information and the final piece that they need is the three digit CVV code on the back of your card.
“They’re going to have your credit card number and they’re going to read it to you so you’re going to be like ‘This has got to be legitimate’ and they’ll have your name and at some point during the scam they’re going to say ‘Hey, can we get that three digit or six digit security code on the back of that,” Said Evansville Police Chief Mike Thompson.
Police departments say that there are a few ways that you can stay safe from these scams though. The biggest way is by simply not answering your phone when you don’t recognize the number. Another way is by not returning calls that only ring once and immediately hang up.
