LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is warning the public about an online scam advertising a fake event.
A flyer circulating social media promotes a phony craft show at Armstrong Park. It also provides an email address to coordinate with duped vendors looking to rent a spot for their booth.
A parks department in North Carolina reached out to officials in Lafayette about the scam. It’s also been reported in Texas and other places across the country.
“It seemed very random. … It really was all over the map, and we wanted to make sure we get that information out there right away because we do host a craft and arts event,” said Samantha Haville, marketing manager for Lafayette parks.
“Our safety and security director did reach out to the contact that was listed on the flyer. … We haven’t had a response just yet,” she added. “We were able to identify that that email has been used multiple times in ways that all appear to be scams.”
