Cocoa Police reminds the public to never give out personal information to anyone over the phone

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Cocoa Police Department has been made aware that people posing as local police are randomly calling residents in an attempt to get personal information in order to access bank accounts and other financial capabilities.

One local resident recently called a Cocoa Police sergeant claiming to be returning a phone call to follow up about a claim.

The sergeant never called the resident and the victim had already provided personal information to the scammer.

Scams, including IRS or other financial claim scams, typically begin with a phone call from someone posing as an authority figure. The scammer may have some of the victim’s personal information such as a partial social security number or be able to list the victim’s mailing address.
