A number of people in British Columbia have been scammed as the result of a disturbing trend targeting new investors looking to get involved in the world of crypto.

Criminals have been actively luring rookie investors through enticing online and social media ads promising quick and high returns on cryptocurrency investments.

The tempting prospect of multiplying a return on their investment leads the victim to reach out to the cryptocurrency exchange platform.

This is when a company representative convinces them to invest in cryptocurrency either through a third-party investment platform, or an app downloaded onto their home computer or mobile device that gives the fraudsters access to the victim’s investment account.

With most of the victims being novice crypto investors, many of them sensed that the promise of immediate returns on investment was too good to be true.

Although persistent calls from the company representative encouraging the victim to continue to invest, all while seeing their profits grow on the platform were enough to carry on.

This went on until the victims realized they had been duped into transferring their savings into a fraudulent account or were defrauded through the app’s access to their online wallets.
