BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) – A bond hearing was held on Monday for a woman accused of poisoning her husband.

Natalie Cochran was indicted for murder as part of the November Raleigh County Grand Jury for the death of her husband, Michael Cochran, in February of 2019.

Cochran has served one year of an 11-year sentence on a separate federal case, in which prosecutors said she defrauded investors of nearly two million dollars through her personal business.

Despite that sentence, her defense attorney Michael Victor still asked for bond on the state murder charge, alluding to possible new developments in the Ponzi scheme case without going into any detail.

“I believe some proceeding may take place or be about to take place that may somehow change the status of my client’s prosecution,” said Victor.

Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield objected to the motion for bond. “I don’t believe this is right for consideration due to her extended time in the federal system. As it sounds right now, it will encompass the entirety of this case.”

Ultimately, the judge sided with the prosecution in denying the motion for bond.

Cochran’s trial on the murder charge is currently set for the first week of June.
